The students at Heritage High School are very good at fund-raising and thinking of others. This morning, I felt extremely proud to stand with our students and hand over a cheque for £701.21 to the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance. The idea for a charity bike-ride came from the Student Voice who, together with Extreme Wheels of Bolsover and Tony Patterson from the Youth Service, completed a sponsored ride around Rother Valley in April.
The students raised £475 from individual sponsorship and the rest was raised around school with collecting buckets.
This is a community of learners, supporting others in their community who in turn support others…it is a ‘cycle’ of success!
If you follow the link, you will see the air ambulance in action.
Please let us have your comments on the work of schools in supporting charities: we support many worthy causes. How do you feel about what these young people have achieved?

ReplyDeleteI think students and parents are forgetting that success is the ultimate reward and that long term, students should be striving for this rather than discussing the advantages and disadvantages of various reward schemes.

Thank you for your comments. With regard to the comments about some systems seeming unfair, we are really trying to offer a fair system of reward with this approach. Please have a look at the website as this may give you some more ideas or views: https://www.vivomiles.com/

I'm a year 10 student at heritage high school and although i think the vivo system is a really good idea i dont think its fair that year 10's only have a year to collect miles when every other year have ages to collect miles, so i think all year tens (that have good attendance and are well bahaved) should already have miles on their accounts.

Some people say that the prizes in the shop are boring and that their needs to be some knew ones. Does anyone have any ideas?

I think the ks4 should already have some vivo miles because they wouls not have enough time to get the more expensive things

I have put your comments forward for the decision making process. Thank you for taking the time to respond. In particular, your suggestion of the book as a reward is excellent. We have launched a programme called 'Accelerated Reader' with Y7 and Y8 which has encouraged more students to read more widely. Reading is something we are really committed to supporting.

I also believe that the children that work hard and that are quiet in class should be rewarded..NOT the children that disrupt the class so the class cannot be taught properly. My daughter does her homework to a high standard and never gets noticed because she is quiet and works well. A few merits here and there for hard work is rubbish. I think children should be rewarded in book vouchers.(enough to buy a book.) Also for girls make up vouchers etc...Boys maybe gadget things and magazines. Its ok you asking for this information its if your going to take any notice at what anyone says.!

I refer back to the questions - what do you think students should be rewarded for? This is your opportunity to make a difference. (NB Please remember your capital letters!)
